The Verse of the Day Wasn’t Enough
The room was dark except for the glow of his phone screen and the tiny blue light on the charger blinking beside his bed.
Story
He opened his Bible app because that was what he always did when he didn’t know what else to do with himself at night. The verse of the day loaded slowly on the screen, bright and neat and somehow too polished for how he felt inside.
He read it once. Then again.
Nothing dramatic happened. No sudden peace dropped into the room like rain on dry ground. No perfect sentence rose up in his mind ready-made for prayer. He just sat there with his elbows on his knees and admitted what he had been trying not to say out loud for weeks: “I’m tired of waiting.”
Tired of praying for change that still hadn’t come. Tired of acting hopeful when his heart felt flat. Tired of opening devotionals like they were bandages for something deeper than he could name.
The honest part was almost embarrassing at first. He had wanted stronger faith than this—cleaner faith, quicker faith, faith that didn’t wobble when life stayed stuck. But there he was, in sweatpants he’d worn too many nights in a row, staring at a verse he could barely absorb.
So he stopped trying to perform a better spiritual version of himself and prayed one sentence instead: “God, I don’t have much tonight.”
No fireworks followed that either. But something softened anyway.
He set his phone face down, left the verse open on the screen as if to say he would come back tomorrow if he needed to, and let himself breathe without fixing anything first.
The waiting season did not end before bed. The problem did not disappear by morning either. But he fell asleep without pretending dryness meant failure.
“Honest prayer counts too.”
Life Lesson
Faith is not always loud or certain. Sometimes it is simply staying near God while admitting you are weary and unsure what to say next.
